The big brother introduces Doodle. The big brother does not seem to like Doodle because of his condition. He doesn't also treat doodle very well or equally.
One day the big brother takes Doodle out. He realizes he does not want to deal with Doodle not being able to do anything that a normal boy can. He decides to make his own little program to help Doodle improve with everything like walking, swimming, rowing a boat, etc.
Everyday the big brother takes Doodle out to practice his skills. Doodle cries and tries his hardest. Eventually, he finally can stand and walk on his own. Doodles birthday is coming so they decide to surprise his family with his new skill on his birthday.
Doodles birthday comes around and he reveals to his family that he can walk. The big brother feels accomplished and the family is happy.
One day the family is eating lunch and they suddenly hear a weird noise coming from outside. They look outside and see a big red bird in their bleeding tree. The family goes outside to see the bird and they figure out the bird is a scarlet ibis and went through a long painful journey to end up in their tree. Doodle takes an emotional liking to the bird and decides to bury it.
After the event with the scarlet ibis, the big brother takes doodle out to practice rowing the boat. Suddenly a storm hits them. The big brother tries to get away from the storm and Doodle cant keep up. Doodle gets lost and the big brother goes to find him. The big brother finds doodle covered in blood under the bleeding tree, he says that the scene looks similar to earlier when the family found the scarlet ibis, and that doodle is his scarlet ibis.
