- they lived in a small home in damascus syrian before escaping because of the conflict.
- the father mahmoud had to walk long hours at night just to get to work as a carpenter. it was not easy
- this story is about a family of 5, sham, talal, balal, mahmoud and fouzieh
- they gave them life jackets and promised they would get them safe in europe
- fouzieh the mothers brother new some people who could help them escape, but they were smugglers
- but when they arrived in libya, the smugglers held them captive for 15 days, saying they had to wait for good wheather but the wheather was fine.
- mahmoud now works as a carpenter in misrata still making little money
- they took them in small boats to get to the main ship. the syrians got life jackets but the Africans cramped underneath them didn't.
- the boat started to take on water.it had sunk fouzieh and balal fell together and were in the water for nights before getting rescued
- how can people leave hundreds of people to die?
- talal was missing. he had drowned.
- after hours of searching they finally found their family
- struggling with the grief of their sons death, they only have one bedroom, a bathroom and cookware on the floor.
- i think maybe it would be better for me to die than live like this
