  • In 2081 everyone was finally equal thanks to the new amendments in place. We achieved this thanks to the USHG which put a handicap on anyone who is over the average intelligence, looks, strength, etc.
  • George and Hazel are a couple and the thing that set them apart was their intelligence. Hazel was average but because George was smart he needed a handicap that set off noises at random so he didn't think too hard.
  • Here is an example:
  • Arghh, gosh these noises, what was i just thinking about?
  • wait why am i crying?
  • They aren't really much better than anyone else...
  • ...Yep
  • That dance was nice.
  • The ballerina's are unable to be impressive because of all of their handicaps. The USHG didn't want people watching the ballerinas to think they were nothing special.
  • In the story "Harrison Burgeron", Kurt Vonnegut establishes the idea that if everyone were to be equal the world would be boring and burdened. He establishes this by using ridiculous scenes to show how dangerous and unwanted total equality is/should be. The people who are seen as "above average" are being borderline tortured showing just what total equality would mean. Total equality is not a goal people should strive for, if this were the case America would not be the free and strong country it is today and citizens would lose their freedom and individuality. These scenes help to portray the message that total equality is not what we should strive for, rather that we need to strive for equal rights. In this story, total equality is being achieved but at what cost? This would not be a world we should strive to live in.
