Storyboard Text

  • Some countries were interested in India because it was rich in natural resources such as iron ore, copper, gold, silver, gemstones, spices, tea and timber. In 1600 the Britons established the East India Company, it was the britsh trading station.
  • We established this company.

  • In the 1700s, the East India Company took more and more Indian land.
  • In the following years, we set up other trading posts in Surat in 1612, in Madras in 1639 and in Bombay in 1668.
  • The East India Company had its own army, that was used against the Indian rulers and against other European nations too. Little by little more Indian land came under British rule. The Indian soldiers were called Sepoys.

  • In January 1857, a new type of rifle was given to each Sepoy. The CARTRIDGES contained a mixture of pork and beef fat. It was the worst mixture for Sepoys. Hindus can't eat beef because to them a cow is sacred. For Muslims are forbidden to eat pork. So the Sepoys rebelled against it, and it was known as the SEPOY MUTINY.
  • There were major battles. Both sides acted brutally. Some mutineers were captured, some of then were hanged but others were punished of being blown from the barrel of a gun.

  • After that, peace was finally declared on 8 July 1858. India was ruled by the Queen Victoria through a viceroy. The term 'British Raj' was used to refered to the priod Britain ruled India between 1858 and 1947. India was known as 'The jewel of the crown' in the British Empire.
