Platt and Bass are two men that work on a plantation in Louisiana and both men do the same work.
Though they do the same work Platt and Bass are treated very different because Platt is a slave and Bass is a free white man.
Platt is like many others is only a slave because he is black and there fore can be treated like property by plantation owners.
Platt is forced to work for free because he is a slave and Bass is payed for his services because he is a white man.
Platt's life as a slave is a miserable one full of forced labor and abuse at the hands of his master. Life is made even by worse due to the fact that like many others Platt has been separated from his family. The worst case of abuse Platt experienced was being force to whip his friend and fellow slave Patsy until she bled.
The evil practice of was finally ended officially in 1865 after the Civil War. The effects of slavery are still felt today in the racism that is deeply in bedded into the culture of America people of color are still subjected to.
