- Marian is looking around Village Tartan. She's trying to solve the mystery surrounding her third cousin, Baron Chideheart. There are rumors that he was behind the attempted assassination of the king of Geranium. (the kingdom this story is set in).

- Flip's hat was full of rolls and bread! even a few pence were inside! Flip explained that during the day, soldiers patrolled the town. The soldiers didn't like townspeople buying goods that Baron didn't get a share of. The was why the candle store was closed. A tourney was going on today, so no guards patrolled.

- Flip takes Marian to his home. Many townspeople are gathered in a root cellar under the candle maker's and the bakers. All the townspeople are afraid of the baron's wrath; thus they stay here until post-midnight, when the market place comes alive with vendors.
