In the beginning of the book Lizabeth is very young in spirit. She enjoys playing with her brother and friends. Lizabeth is also living in poverty. Her family in struggling with money. Lizabeth's dad is having a hard time finding a job. While her mom has a job that keeps her busy.
Later Lizabeth and her friends went to Miss Lotties house. They always found annoying her was fun. They passed by John Burke, Lotties son, and were now looking in her yard. Lizabeth and her friends spotted the marigolds that her and her frioends despised, and that Miss Lottie cared so much for. Lizabeth started throwing rocks. She was not doing something very kind and later she realiezed it was wrong.
Lizabeth realized that what she did to Miss Lotties flowers was wrong. She went to apologize and in that moment she understood what the flowers meant to Miss Lottie. She could not express this to Miss Lottie but, she knew in her head. In that time Lizabeth felt like that was her first act as an adult. Lizabeth felt that she was taking her our actions. Lizabeth was now an adult!
