Yeah, that's correct. One of my friends escaped from the sharecropping system in order to prevent him from being in debt. He then went to become a buffalo soldier to escape it.

You can think of it as a loan, you rent land, then the owner of the land gives you supplies to grow the produce and they expect something in return. That usually ends up in serious debt because they can charge high rates. They also segregated African Americans from the white people, I thought the civil war was over and everyone could be together again, not seperated or segregated.
