- Have you heard of the Buffallo Soldiers?
- Yeah, that's correct. One of my friends escaped from the sharecropping system in order to prevent him from being in debt. He then went to become a buffalo soldier to escape it.
- Yeah, they are the African Americans soldiers right?
- You can think of it as a loan, you rent land, then the owner of the land gives you supplies to grow the produce and they expect something in return. That usually ends up in serious debt because they can charge high rates. They also segregated African Americans from the white people, I thought the civil war was over and everyone could be together again, not seperated or segregated.
- You do know what sharecropping is right?
- Not really, all I know is that it's related to farming.
- Those were called the Jim Crow Laws. Yeah, really unfair to us. We couldn't even vote.
- They're both the same thing but sure.
- When you say that we didn't have the right to vote, you mean suffarage right?
- That's like those laws which were racially unfair to African Americans which really limited our rights. What was it called again?
