After, supposedly, every 12 has received their assignments, everyone claps in congratulations to them, but the people know something is wrong and are confused as to why Jonas was skipped. Jonas is sitting in anxiety and embarrassment as he didn't get called to receive his assignment.
Oh no....this can't be happening. What did I do wrong?
What about Jonas?
The Chief Elder apologizes to the community for causing them anxiety and they feel she has made a mistake. They accept her apology and she apologizes again, specifically to Jonas.
We accept your apology.
I apologize to the community.
The Chief Elder calls Jonas up to the stage to receive his assignment. Jonas walks up slowly and embarrassed.
Jonas, please come to the stage.
You can do this. Just act calm.
Jonas comes to the stage and the Chief Elder explains that Jonas is not like the other kids. He has been selected as the next Receiver of Memory which is a very, very rare selection and the most honored in the community.
Jonas has not been assigned...he has been selected as our next Receiver of Memory.
No...I don't.......I can't.
She explains what this job means and why they chose Jonas for it. She explains the qualities of this job which are intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, and the Capacity to See Beyond.
He must have an attribute which the Receiver calls the Capacity to See Beyond....and Jonas has it.
The Chief Elder finishes announcing Jonas' position. The audience slowly starts chanting his name, but it progressively gets louder and louder as it did with Caleb, the little boy who died. Jonas is feeling confused and nervous.
