Henry Hudson is believed to be born in 1565. He grew up as a cabin boy and developed the skills and experience of being on sea.
One hundred years after Columbus had died, Hudson was determined to find a route through the west. He gained support from some English merchants to pay for the voyage.
I shall fund your voyage! Good luck!
His first and second voyages were both unsuccessful due to the icy conditions which forced them to turn back. After the two failures, he turned to the Dutch East India Company which allowed him to take a third voyage.
Instead, he decided to sail northwest rather than northeast. When he arrived, he went down a river, thinking it led to the Northwest Passage. Eventually, the water became too shallow to keep going.
It is too shallow, we must go back.
When he returned, Kings James l made him an offer to find the Northwest Passage for England. He followed an inlet to northwest Canada which led him to the Hudson Bay. When Winter set in, he was forced to stay.
Is that ice?
The following June, the crew members were starving, and they were convinced Hudson had a secret stash of food. This caused them to turn against him and they forced him take a small ship home, along with others who were loyal to him. They were never seen again.
