Rashi and Radak disscussing the events:
קוּם לֵךְ אֶל-נִינְוֵה, הָעִיר הַגְּדוֹלָה; וּקְרָא אֵלֶיהָ אֶת-הַקְּרִיאָה, אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי דֹּבֵר אֵלֶיךָ. 'Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and make unto it the proclamation that I bid thee.'
Yonah listened to G-d and walked for 3 full days to get to Ninveh
People of Nineveh, in forty days the city will be overturned
We need to repent!!!!!
He did not say, “Destroyed,” because “overturned” has two meanings, bad and good. If they do not repent, it will be destroyed; if they repent, then “overturned” refers to the people of Nineveh, that they will be changed from bad to good, and they will repent.
Good point Rashi.
I believe its because the sailors that were with Yonah before survived the shipwreck and just happened to end up in Nineveh. The sailors told the people of Nineveh about Yonah and what happened...
Why would the people of Nineveh believe Yonah?
...Later on when Yonah got to Nineveh, he smelt like fish and the sea. Yonah warned them about what was going to happen which backs up the sailors story and explains why the people of Nineveh would believe Yonah and repent.
ohh.. now I get it.
