The boys are gathering stones and making piles of them. They are having a lot of fun and laughing and playing. The girls sit out and talk together.
Hutchinson!
The Black Box
The parents call their kids over before the lottery begins. They want their kids near them during the process.
Who has it?
The Black Box
Tessie Hutchinson has it!
As the whole town gathers together, Mr. Summers begins the drawing for the Lottery. The husband of each family comes to the box alphabetically and draws a slip of paper. They can't open it until everyone has a slip.
It isn't fair! It's not right!
The Hutchinson's receive the piece of paper with the black dot on it. Now everyone in that family draws to see who wins the lottery.
The villagers see that Tessie Hutchinson (the wife) has the slip of paper with the black dot on it. She has won the lottery.
The winner of the lottery (Tessie Hutchinson) is stoned to death, because that is what winning the lottery means.
