- The setting takes place at Waverly Place in San Francisco's Chinatown. Waverly Place was a two-bedroom flat for people that financially struggled. The character wouldn't describe them as "poor" though.
- The characters emotions were filled with joy because she got to play chess with her brother. The brothers emotions are also happy because he gets to see his little sister after being away for awhile.
- After learning so much about chess, she decided to play against different people like, old, young, and middle-aged. Her first match was with an old man who called himself Lau Po.
- At one point, Wave-ly Jong (the main character) wanted to give up and not participate in the local tournament because she was getting pressured by her mother to, "win more trophies". She also shut herself from her family, making them look at her differently.
- In the store, Wave-ly told her mom how she doesn't like it when she introduces different people to her. Her mother thought it meant that Wave-ly was ashamed to be her daughter, thus starting an argument, making her bump into an old lady causing her to drop her shopping bags filled with oranges and tin cans.
- Unfortunately, her family had no concerns of what she does now since they felt like she had no concerns for them. They ignored her when she came home. Sitting on the bay of her window, she thought about her next chess tournament.
