- Two characters are walking to Horshaw, a miner's village, they can hear a church bell in the distance. It's seven o'clock and is starting to get dark.
- Horshaw is like a black smear against the green fields.A ugly, little place, where the spook's apprentice (the man with brown hair) never wants to live there, even for a short visit.
- Streets are narrows, and characters have to keep close to the walls to make place for huge horses and their carts heaped with cobs of coal.
- The characters walk through the narrow clubbed streets. The streets are dirty, there are plies of coal everywhere The two characters feel the insistent looks of the inhabitants on them. They didn't feel comfortable.
- Few miners with dour-faced, and tools are talking together. The characters understand that the miners will start their night shift.
- The miners aren't welcoming and on of them makes the sign of the cross. And the Spook said he need to get used to it, because they are rarely welcomed and some places are worse.
