  • soldiers often ate bread and salt pork though things like honey and tobacco could be taken from southern plantations the more they advanced into the south, soldiers under Sherman did not carry food with them and lived off the land on their attack on Georgia and South Carolina
  • battles for union soldiers were often brutal under the overly cautious Mclellan who was the general during the battle of Antiedam the single bloodiest day in US history but they often won under Grant, Sherman and Meade
  • medicine in the civil war was mostly giving a soldier a nearly deadly dose of chlorophorm and chopping off the injured limb which often resulted in infections of the deadly virus gangreen
  • camp life was often boring in long term and short term camps and was a lull between marching and battle and only served to grow the dread of the soldiers in the mostly unsanitary conditions
  • POWs in the war would often travel with armies even in battles until they could be incarcerated in a prison
