This explains it because it shows the scenery around there village at the beginning of the story.
"...His estate dwindled away under his management...There was little more left then a mere patch of indian corn and potatoes...was the worst-conditioned farm in the neiborhood."(272)
This shows that he'd much rather let his property rot away to nothing then to actually work on it.
