Eliza Lucas: Born:December 28,1722 In Antigua and Barbuda
Grew up on one of her families three sugarcane plantations with her two brothers and only sister.
Eliza attended treasured her education at a boarding school where her studies included french and music but her favorite subject was botany.
In 1738, the year Eliza turned 16 she moved with her family from Antigua to South Carolina, where she inherited three plantations from her father, Eliza started experimenting with cultivating and improving strains of the indigo plant.Her Mother died shortly after they moved.
After 3 years of experimenting with indigo she proved that indigo can be grown and processed in South Carolina.In 1744 she shared indigo with other planters which lead to an indigo production.Indigo was the second cash crop when rice was the first.
