- This is Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. These three youngsters live in the Baudelaire mansion. Sunny is the youngest among the three. She was an infant and lacked in size. She has some trouble reading words and is often mistaken for other ridiculous words. Klaus is considered to be the middle child and likes to examine creatures in tide pools. He is younger than Violet and wears glasses which makes him look intelligent. Violet is the oldest and she loves to focus on inventions and building strange devices.. She is known to be a person who thinks hard because her hair is always tied up.
- Sunny, Klaus, and Violet are on Briny Beach, enjoying the scenery of the sky and the sea. Sunny becomes alerted of something in the distance. "Gack!" she begins to exclaim. Violet and Klaus then noticed a figure emerging from the fog in the distance. The figure drew closer and closer to the children.
- A towering head emerges from the fog at the beach. Violet and Klaus pondered as to who this unknown figure might be, but they couldn't figure it out. Violet had a brief impulse to throw a rock at the figure as it came closer, but they soon realised this man was. Mr. Poe, a man they'd met at dinner parties. He was a friend of the parents children.
