Coercive Patriotism: During this time extreme repression happened at this time it took place at the hands of the state government and private groups. Throughout the war many states banned red and black flags because they were symbols of communism and anarchism. A lot of Americans were questioned if they were patriots.

The first Red Scare in the U.S. happened just after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and during WW1, when people were very patriotic and social agitation of left-wingers further aggravated the political, national and social tensions. A belief lived among the Americans that a Bolshevik worker revolution in the U.S. was imminent.

In 1916 a man by the name of Wilson endorsed votes for women. The US was the 27th country to give women the ability to vote. The 19th amendment it possible.
Americanization program sought to assimilate immigrants into America. The first drastic fallout of immigration were from Europe. Due to the war America accelerated efforts to diversify the population
African Americans during the war had little to no access to industrial freedom. Blacks had little jobs available to them, the ones that were amiable to them were jobs such as being janitors and cleaning women. Since the majority of blacks were located in the south they were not able to vote because of their race.
