  • Why do people in America wink. What does this mean? Is she trying to be friendly?
  • Don't be rude. You are China's little ambassador. Make us proud!
  • Amitabha!
  • I wonder why she keeps winking. I need to send a letter to Shirley's parents.
  • Maybe if I keep opening and shutting my eyes, they'll think I'm nice.
  • Shirley kicks off her move to America by starting school at the local public school. It's pretty awkward for her since she can't understand English or customs. The principal winked at Shirley when she first arrived. Since she is not familiar with the culture, it's hard for her to understand what winking is.
  • how is first day of school?
  • In her new classroom, Shirley meets her classmates, all of whom look different from one another.
  • It says Shirley kept blinking in class today. The teacher wants us to take her to the doctor. 
  • Shirley doesn't understand what winking is. She thinks people in America wink as a sign of being kind. She keeps blinking over and over again. The teacher thought that something is wrong with Shirley's eyes.
  • How is Shirley's vision?
  • She has 20/20 vision!
  • Shirley is worried about what her teacher wrote in the note to her parents. 
  • As it turns out, everything is fine-except her teacher gives her parents a note about Shirley's constant winking.
