  • Guru Nanak was born in a small town called Talwandi 500 years ago. The town was 40 miles from Lahore.
  • God's message
  • As he grow up he thought about God and dreamed about working. One day, his father gave him 20. Rupees and told him to go to the city. When he arrived at the city he saw some monks they said they had not eaten for three days. so Nanak bought some food and gave it to the monks. His father was angry so his sister told Nanak to live with her and her husband.
  • Nanak the Teacher
  • As Nanak's first job he was a shopkeeper at Sultanpur. Often he would explain about how to love and follow God to the people who came to the shop. After a while some people called him Guru which means teacher.
  • The New Guru
  • When he was 30 years old, Nanak got up one morning before dawn and went to say his prayers by the river. Like every morning he left his clothes beside the river and jumped into the river but something wired happened. After a while people started to get worried because Nanak had not come up from the underneath the water. People thought he might have died or drowned in the water.
  • Guru Nanak's Death
  • Two days pass and there was till no sign of Nanak. The next day Nanak suddenly appeared and told the people of the village how to get closer to God and that everyone is equal in God's eyes. He also said this to them, "there is only God's path and I shall follow God's path".
  • As Nanak grew older he travelled around different parts of India to tell people God's message. The people who listened to him were known as Sikhs, a word that means 'learner' and he became known as Guru Nanak, God's teacher.
  • Guru Nanak spent twenty years going on four journeys to spread God's words. Near the end of Guru Nanak's life he told Lahna that he was the new Guru. The people were amazed and all the Sikhs were told to follow him now.
  • Days later Guru Nanak died, the Hindus wanted to cremate him but the Muslims wanted to burry him. Suddenly a wise man appeared, he told them to look under the sheets.They looked under the sheets to see just three flowers and no body so they halted the flowers and the sheets and they cremated half and buried the other half.
