The first girl to go on the field, we break her neck.
Characters
Why can't girls go for the water too?
Setting
The form of conflict is external and man vs. society. The boys see carrying the water as a sign of dominance over the other people in the classroom. The boys have been harassing the girls everyday and excluding them since Alma Niles asked if girls could carry the water.
Point of View
Alma knew what it cost Arnolld to tell her this but she stood firm,
Alma Niles is a protagonist and a flat character because she does not change how she thinks in the story. The boys are the antagonist and the only ones who go and fill the water bucket, but Alma Niles wanted to change this and she asked the teacher why girls can't carry the water bucket too. The boys were upset about this and wanted to beat her up.
Plot
The setting is a rural school in 1950s Canada. It causes the conflict in the story, because in 1950s Canada, there wasn't as big of a push going on for gender equality, and in rural areas, there wasn't either. This made the idea of girls carrying the water new, which is why the boys resisted it. Details like that in the main classroom, you might almost think...that you were looking at one of those real city schools show that there is a divide between this school and the outside world.
Theme
Next week Alma Niles and Joyce Shipley will go for the water.
The story is told in third person limited. Narrator speaks mostly through the thoughts of alma and we see the story and character relations unfold through her eyes
The climax of the story is when Ms.Raltson went to join the softball field after the girls were kicked out by the boys.
COME ON!!! COME ON!!
The theme of the story, The Friday Everything Changed, is that it is possible that it only can take one person to change peoples perspectives on the situation. For instance, Alma changed the teacher and the girls mind about carrying the water bucket. The other girls had no interest or were too afraid to speak up and say they wanted to carry the bucket until Alma did it for them.
