  • Dharavi in Mumbai is the biggest slum of Asia and one of the most densely populated areas of the world. It is estimated that around 1 million people live in Dharavi.
  • We would visit Dharavi and find out more about what living in such slum is like..!!
  • Before going into Dharavi, We would ask Mumbai residents living outside of slums about their perception of people living in Dharavi.
  • Ill-dressed, Ill-mannered, improper language, live in dirty conditions and perceived as thieves
  • Ignorant attitude towards them, Wealth gap increases the doubt of trust
  • Despite having very less income, these people welcomed us full-heartedly.But still access to Clean Water is still a DREAM for the people living in Dharavi
  • What is the condition of drinking water, Is it clean or dirty.? Also How much do you earn?
  • Sometimes the water is clean and sometimes dirty. When it stinks we don't fill our utensils with that water and we earn around Rs. 6000 every month
  • Due to these living conditions, what kind of diseases do everyone experience and how normal is it?
  • Due to dense-population and lack of space, people also suffer from various diseases in the conditions they are living in
  • Due to the unhygienic surroundings people suffer from diseases like cold, fever, typhoid, malaria, dengue and many more in addition to which people fall sick more often.
  • Despite living in very bad conditions the children in Dharavi find something good and enjoy their company and play happily. Moreover, They are used to it and might feel awkward if shifted to some other place
  • The people treat us badly, they consider us unhygienic, uneducated and criminals. We feel very embarrassed to say that we are from Dharavi.
  • How do people outside slums treat you children?
  • Inspite of being poor and uneducated, the people in Dharavi know the importance of education. They encourage their children to study as around 70% of the population of Dharavi is illiterate. We got to know this from a Pre-School teacher (Mrs.Fareesa) in Dharavi.
  • What is the scenario of education here and what message would you like to give the people living outside slums?
  • Thank You..!!
  • Now the new people in Dharavi are wanting to get their children educated and prevent them from doing the job they are doing. And a message to other is that "Money is not real happiness, the people you are surrounded with is the real happiness." We people in these slums just don't have all the necessities and comfort but we are still happy with people we have got.
