- Intro
- When will they find out I smoke?
- I want to be a flower child.
- All my sister desires is to be a flower child, my dad only cares about work, and my mom smokes "secretly".
- Conflict
- Holling, go outside and clean the erasers. NOW!
- Yes, Ma'am.
- Rising Action
- Wow! This Shakespeare guy is a hoot. And, so is this dead guy, Romeo.
- Romeo is more than a dead guy, Holling.
- Holling Hoodhood lives with his mom, his dad, and his sister in what he calls "The Perfect House" in Long Island, New York. Holling begins the 1967-1968 school year, as seventh grader at Camillo Junior High, with his stern homeroom teacher, Mrs. Baker, whose husband is deployed in Vietnam.
- Climax
- The Hoodhood's "Perfect House."
- It’s so beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it.
- When will this finish? I need to go to work?
- Every Wednesday, Holling spends his Wednesday afternoons by himself with Mrs. Baker instead of going to religion classes. Holling thinks his teacher hates him because she has to spends her Wednesday afternoons with him.
- Falling Action
- Usually, Mrs. Baker gave Holling errands to keep him busy like cleaning around the classroom or to clean up the closet. Later on, she started giving him Shakespeare plays to read. From reading those plays, he learn life lessons that help him in the real world. These plays help him faces community theater, bullies, track, baseball games, getting hit by buses, and the Vietnam War. With all that's happening, Holling's father selfish acts and words drives Holling's teenage sister, Heather, to run away to California.
- Resolution
- Camillo Junior High
- Holling’s bond with Mrs. Baker grows stronger. He sees her less of a teacher and more of a friend. One day, they went on a trip to explore architectural sites and Holling discovered more about architecture than from what his dad, the architect of Hoodhood and Associates, told him. He discovered that it is more than power, money, and status. He also discovered that he misses his sister.
- I know, it melts in your heart.
- Holling gives his sister all of his money in order for her to come back home since his father doesn't want to. This event showcases Holling as a mature young adult. After that, he and his class went on a camping trip and then they went to Danny's, Holling's friend, bar mitzvah.
- Holling tells his father that being an architect isn't the definition of a man and told him that he doesn't want to follow in his footsteps. Heather came back home with the help of Holling. Mrs. Baker's husband returns from Vietnam safely. Holling matures throughout the story and builds a strong bond with Mrs. Baker.
