  • California becoming a free state upset the balance that was brought by the Missouri Compromise. The Fugitive Slave Act upset the North because they felt they were helping the slave trade.
  • That is when any runaway slave found in the north can be sent back to their owner even if they weren't a slave.
  • Lincoln was a republican candidate and his party was anti-slavery. The South was distraught by this because they thought he would take away slavery, even though he said he would not. This led to the Civil War because the South thought Lincoln was lying and decided to succeed.
  • Yes, the South seceding.
  • The South succeeded and formed the Confederacy. They found union territory (Fort Sumter) within their country, which the South didn't want so they attacked. This was the official start of the Civil War.
