"'Jonas had not been assigned...Jonas has been selected!'" (Lowry 75).
Chief Elder made a mistake. he has never made mistakes. When she apologies to the community and to Jonas for making the mistake. When she admits to the mistake everybody is surprised that she made this mistake of forgetting Jonas.
"'Intelligence,.... We are all aware that Jonas had been a top student throughout his school days'" ( Lowry 78).
Chief Elder says to Jonas that he does not have a assignment. Jonas has been selected. Since Jonas had been "selected" he does not know what his assignment/job with be for the rest of his life. This brings curiosity to Jonas.
As thoughts are pouring through Jonas's head, Chief Elder explains what exactly he will be doing. Jonas was going to be the next receiver of memory. Jonas didn't understand why he has been chosen out of everybody else in the community. What made him so special?
The Chief Elder shares that Jonas during his training and the rest of his job he will be alone. Nobody except him and the Giver can see the memories. He can't tell anybody about what he sees. Jonas will not be training with any friends.
Chief Elder explains what the Receiver of Memory needs. They need to be intelligent, be full of smarts. They needs to be integrity. They need to have courage. Most importantly they need to have the ability to see beyond. She's explains how Jonas has or will have all of these traits.
As the Chief Elder continued to speak, Jonas saw the crowd change in a blink of the eye. He recalled what had happened a while back with the apple. Could he really see beyond?
