Refugee is a historical fiction novel written in 2017 that weaves together three compelling stories of families seeking sanctuary in other countries. Students will see themselves in the young protagonists: children faced with tragic circumstances but who, at their heart, are just kids who love their families and want to live in peace.
Storyboard Description
Having students choose a favorite quote or scene from the book allows them to express which parts of the story resonated with them on a personal level. In this way, students are making a text-to-self connection that demonstrates their understanding of the characters and their development or the themes of the novel. Students can share their storyboards afterwards and have a short discussion about what the quotes mean to them.

- Favorite Scene from REFUGEE by Alan Gratz
- One of the scenes from Refugee that resonated with me is when Mahmoud and his family are thrown from their boat on the way to Lesbos. They realize that the life preservers that they were conned into purchasing were fakes. The family is separated and the one boat they see won't stop to help them. Mahmoud and his mother are forced to give up baby Hana to be saved, but they are left to drown. Mahmoud uses the light from his phone to try and signal for help. The harrowing and visceral scene of terror and helplessness is one that sticks with the reader.
- “Please!” Mahmoud cried. He sobbed with the effort of fighting off the man’s fingers and hanging onto the dinghy. “Please, take us with you!”“No! No room!”“At least take my sister!” Mahmoud begged. “She’s a baby. She won’t take up any room!”
