- Physical Traits: A 39 year old man with a varicose ulcer above his right ankle. He works in the Ministry of Truth with changing documents in the history books. He seems a bit older physically with certain health issues.Character Traits: He is a bit melancholic and dry, and is obsessed with Julia. He also disagrees with Big Brother and is drawn to O'Brien.Quote: ...it aint right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles say... (page 9)
- Big Brother
- Physical Traits: She works in the Fiction Department with novel-writing machines. Described as a bold-looking, 27 year old girl, she has thick dark hair, a freckled face, and swift, athletic movements.Character Traits: She seems to be very innocent, having an atmosphere of hockey fields, cold baths, community hikes, and gentleness. However, she seemed to be more dangerous than most, and Winston even questioned if she was in the Thought Police.Quote: But this particular girl gave him the impression of being more dangerous than most. (Page 10)
- Emmanuel Goldstein
- Physical Traits: A large, burly man with with neck and a course, humorous, brutal face and glasses. He is a member of the Inner Party with important posts. Easy to talk to.Character Traits: He's very civilized, amd draws in Winston. He also has an urbane manner and a prizefighter's physique along with intelligence. Quote: '/ am with you, I know precisely what you are feeling. I know all about your contempt, your hatred, your disgust,. But don't worry, I am on your side!' (page 17)
- Mr. Charrington
- Physical Traits: About 45 years old, he has a heavy black mustache and ruggedly handsome features. Character Traits: Very powerful, but mysteriously calm. He leads the Party and people secretly loathe him, but he has a huge influence over them. Quote: Big Brother is watching you. (page 2)
- Physical Traits: Known as the Enemy of the People, has a Jewish face, white hair, small goatee beard, and a clever face. Character Traits: He strongly dislikes Big Brother along with being condemned to death and suddenly escaped. He's been on the run since, but he used to be a leader of the Party. Quote: Goldstein was the renegade and backslider who once, long ago (how long ago, nobody quite remembered), had been one of the leading figures of the Party, almost on a level with Big Brother himself, and then had engaged in a counterrevolutionary activities, had been condemned to death, and had mysteriously escaped and disappeared. (page 11,12)
- Physical Traits: A 63-year old widower with a long, benevolent nose, glasses, white hair with bushy black eyebrows, and a hint of intellectuality.Character Traits: He owns a shop that Winston bought his notebook from. He seems relatively wise, considering his age. Quote: Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clement's! (Page 98)
