Storyboard Text

  • Spain had control over Cuba, then its economy fell. The Cuban became very angry and started to rebel against Spain. Spain made a few changes to keep the people happy. Once the economy fell, the Cubans rebelled again, this time, Spain fought back.
  • As a last attempt for peace with Spain, McKinley sent a list of demands to Spain.
  • Then General Weyler put the Cubans into "reconcentration" camps. These stories made there way into the U.S newspapers and the companies used something called yellow journalism. It's when the newspaper writer take a story and exaggerate them.
  • The U.S.S Maine was a ship that was sent to a harbor in Havana to protect the American citizens there and the property. Unfortunately there was a blast that exploded the ammunition and set the ship on fire. No one officially knows the cause of the blast, but Americans still blamed Spain.
  • They stated: compensation of the Maine, end re-concentration camps, *independence of Cuba (which Spain did not except), and a truce in Cuba.
  • After the war, the U.S and Spain made a treaty. Both the countries signed in France. 
  • The U.S wanted the Philippines and Cuba, but both of those countries stayed independent. But, we did gain Puerto Rico.
