Participant begins the simulation by being assigned an experience card which will determine which sequences of events they cycle through.
Upon tapping in to begin the simulation, the participant is assigned a persona and corresponding out to wear.
In this first phase of the simulation participants are directed through a streetscape scenario in which they experience the type of verbal harassment that women are subjected to in public spaces.
The second phase of the simulation brings the participant through a darkened alleyway scenario or similarly unsettling physical space where they can experience what it is like to feel physically and psychologically intimidated, and the accompanying sense that you must be hyper vigilant. Threats include poor visibility, isolation, groups of young men.
Phase three places the participant into a scenario which involves direct social interaction. The coffee shop scenario brings the experience of receiving unwanted attention and sexual advances while engaging in ordinary day to day activities. Baristas and fellow patrons behave in ways which ignore both spatial and social boundaries.
The final stage of the simulation returns the participant to the 'real world' exhibition space where they are asked to view displays which use maps to visualise the real life scale of the threatening experiences which women encounter. This visual representation challenges the viewer to reflect on the seemingly benign behaviours that they themselves might have engaged in which contribute to the pervasive fear that women in their communities live with.
