HI, I am Doctor Apple, how can I help you today.
I am Ruth and I am assisting Ella to her appointment today, we are from an assisted living home and we have concerns regarding her getting enough nutrition.
Slide: 3
Why do you have this concern? Is she not eating or is having issues with swallowing?
Well Ella has Down Syndrome and fights with the staff regarding eating and is losing weight, we would like to see if we can have a feeding tube placed.
I like food!

We do not place feeding tubes unless it is needed, Ella has no difficulty with swallowing. What does the family think about this?
The family does not have much to do with Ella and because she is losing weight the state feels like this is the right decision.
Slide: 5
I cannot see the need to place a feeding tube, if your insistent, we will need to call in the ethics team to meet.
The staff cannot get Ella to eat, why are you not willing to help us feed her? Please hold this meeting

Mother of Ella: Why would you put a tube in my daughter?!
Surgeon: These meeting is being held to discuss the need of a feeding tube.
Ethics member: This patient does not have any concerns with swallowing.
State: Your daughter is losing weight and will not eat for staff

Ella's mother:I will come by the home and help feed her, she does not need this.
Surgeon: This patient can swallow; I do not feel like a feeding tube is warranted for her.
State: Ella will continue to lose weight, if we do not do something.
Ethics member: I agree that something needs to be done to help her eat but putting her through surgery for a feeding tube is not what is best for her.

I am here to do what is best for my patients,
Thank you for doing what was right for Ella and what she would want.
