During his six months at Covey's plantation, Douglass experienced the true horror of slavery. He was worked day and night, no matter the conditions. Snow or rain, hot or cold. He barely got through an entire week without being beaten. Covey was a horid overseer and showed no mercy.
Time goes by, until at one point Douglass can take no more. After a series of painful incidents, Douglass has no choice but to run away. But of course, with no where to go, he is forced to return. Soon after, Covey throws a surprise attack at Douglass, planning to whip him. But Dougalss had had enough. He found the last bits of courage inside of him, and resolved that he would fight, or die trying.

After winning the fight with Covey, Dougalss' mindset about life as a whole changed for the better. He knew that whatever was coming next, he could take it; he was willing to do whatever it takes.
