Currently, the cost of living in Chicago is 50% higher than the US average which leads to higher poverty rates as it is unreasonable to expect people to get by in these conditions. This will cause residents to either live potentially paycheck to paycheck or move out of the city. Overall this will drive down the city’s population as people won’t people able to afford these high prices and therefore drives the city's attractiveness down.

Now what can we do about this? We can advocate for Minimum wage and Labor Protections. Specifically when it comes to policies around fair minimum wage that aligns with Chicago’s cost of living. Another important thing that we can stand up for is access to healthcare in Chicago. The goal would be to ensure that access to affordable healthcare options would be available for all residents and overall mitigate the potential financial expenses that come with the medical industry. We can also advocate for fair consumer protections. This would allow consumers to buy the products they need without having to deal with unfair business practices. Lastly, we can advocate for affordable housing incentives. This would encourage the development of affordable housing units and implement zoning policies to ensure a portion of new housing development is affordable.
