Storyboard Text

  • "I straighten up and allow the tiny brave part of me to speak" (Thomas 19.100)
  • "'Yes, ma'am'" (Thomas 19.100).
  • "I move Maya out the way and slam my fist against the side of Hailey's face. It hurts, but damn it feels good" (20.44).
  • "I'm just as pissed as anybody, but this . . . this isn't it. Not for me" (Thomas 23.80).
  • In this moment, the DA, Ms. Monroe, asks Starr if she is okay with talking about Khalil"s death. In her head, Starr feel sick thinking about witnessing 115 shooting Khalil, but she knows people are watching and counting on her to stand up for Khalil. This is a significant moment because Starr finally builds up the confidence to openly talk about Khalil's death in front of everybody.
  • This moment portrays when Starr and Maya confronted Hailey about her racism. This was ongoing and Hailey would always deny it, and when she was confronted, she made even more racist remarks. This is a significant moment because Starr and Maya realized that Hailey was a bad friend to be around and never tried to empathize with problems that didn't relate to her.
  • At first, Star appreciated that people cared about Khalil and were peacefully protesting since 115 was not convicted. However, later on she realized that violently rioting is not the correct way to stand up for Khalil. This signifies that Starr learned the reason why the system looks down on black people and she should stop this way of rioting.
