- How does the character look?
- After Stella gave birth to Kennedy, she was scared that she would be dark, "But after she was born, she felt overwhelmed with relief. The newborn in her arms was perfect: milky skin, wavy blonde hair, eyes so blue they looked violet" (Bennett 151). She was scared of getting found out by Blake, but when she saw Kennedy, she felt better because she was so fair skinned she looked whiter than her.
- Stella was described as being shy and standoffish, but she puts up a front when anything reminds her of her blackness, "Because we don't play with n******" (Bennett 165). When she caught Kennedy playing with Loretta's child, she snatched her away because she was scared about getting found out
- What kind of person are they?
- When stella decided to pass as white, she wanted to act the part as much as possible, avoiding and hating anything that reminded her of or could out her of her blackness, "Before she knew it, she stormed across the street and grabbed her daughter's arm...she dragged Kennedy back in the house" (Bennett 165). Because she wants to really pass as white, she shows resentment for their black neighbors that moved in.
