  • I began my journey with academic writing in preschool at the British American International School in Charlotte NC. At this point in my writing career, creativity and descriptive writing were praised. I received awards for my use of flowery figurative language and was unaware of writing for any other prupose.
  • I then moved on to Socrates Academy, which was a Greek Charter School that I attended for third and fourth grade. During these formative years of my academic writing development, more concise and formulaic writing was encouraged, and students were presented with prompts and rubrics for the first time.
  • Next, I transitioned to McKee Road Elementary School for fifth grade. Mckee was the first public Charlotte Mecklenburg School I had attended so I was introduced to Common Core writing and reading standards for the first time. I was taught about writing for different purposes and analyzed texts for elements such as tone or author's purpose. I was also taught writing and reading skills for standardized testing.
  • Next, I graduated elementary school and began attending Community House Middle School. In middle school, I experienced a significant change in my academic writing development as my teachers introduced me to a variety of genres of writing, but also research. Research was a new concept to me,and I began learning how to use different tools in the library and on a computer to research questions and write about my findings.

  • I graduated middle school and began attending Ardrey Kell High School. In high school my academic writing developed largely in my junior and senior year. Junior year, I took AP Language and Composition in which I learned how to answer prompts effectively and creatively within a short timeframe for exams. Senior year, I took AP Literature and Composition in which I learned about different writing styles, nuances, and symbolism. I also became more familiar with American Classics.
  • Finally, I graduated high school and committed to NC State! Second semester I took a course called Disciplinary Perspectives in Writing. This was my first experience with a university level writing course, and I was challenged and learned a lot! I visited the writing center a few times and utilized peer revision and the many resourcesI was provided with.
