Storyboard Text

  • Following the Death of Elizabeth I, (a Tudor) James I, (a Stuart) took the throne. While the Tudors believed in divine right they recognized the value in parliament. The Stuarts however, did not recognize the value of parliament which lead to a lot of problems during their reign.
  • We are all here today to remember our Queen, Elizabeth I. She will be remembered as one of the greatest absolute monarchs of history.
  • She will be lived on through her brother, King James I as she had no children of her own.
  • During James I's reign, he fiercely believed in divine right. He did not work well with parliament. He didn't realize the value that they brought and wanted to be an absolute monarch without parliament.
  • Today we are saying goodbye to James I. He was the start of the Stuarts reign in England. The Stuarts didn't want to deal with Parliament like the Tudors. Instead the believed in divine right
  • Charles I was an absolute monarch in England. like his father he spent a lot of money on wars and art/culture in England and quickly ran out of money because he didn't use Parliament's funds. He was seen as being too friendly to Catholics and tried to dissolve parliament.
  • I am the parliament! We don't have to listen to you! We refuse to be dissolved.
  • I am your KING! I don't have to listen to YOU! I have divine right!
  • One day Charles brought an army into parliament and tried to kill the leaders. The leaders escaped and the English civil war was started. The people who supported parliament were the roundheads. The people who supported the king were the cavaliers. The roundheads won.
  • The Cavaliers for the King!
  • The roundheads for parliament!
  • After the roundheads won the war they put King Charles I on trial. He was condemned to death. This showed that no monarch can claim absolute power in England and ignore the law.
  • No monarch can ignore the law again!
  • After the execution of Charles. Parliament decided to not have a king because they will have too much power. Instead, they decided to make the general of the roundheads, Oliver Cromwell in charge. However, he had many problems: he created a military dictatorship and created the Puritan "Rule of Saints".
