  • A really really long time ago a young boy with the name Uenuku explored his home with the name hawaiki. he traveled and came across some amazing nature. As the sun was going down and the moon was coming up, he heard an outstanding waiata. Uenuku followed the sound and came across 2 sisters from the realm of the gods swimming in a river. There names were Hineukohurangi and Hinewai.
  • He introduce himself to the girls and offered to take them to show them Hinepukohurangi. They spent evenings exploring before they fell in love with each other. But with most love stories there was always a problem. Since Hinepukohurangi was a mist maiden, she could only visit Hawaiki when it goes dark outside. Her sister would always come and get her in the morning from Uenuku's village, before anyone could see her. They had to keep their friendship a secret.
  • Uenuku and his friends set sail in the early morning. They traveled for quite a few days across the blue oceans. Until they arrived at such a beautiful place called Aotearoa
  • fone night they came to the bottom of a huge big tall moutnain that was as tall as the fluffy clouds Uenuku thought he should try climb to the top of the maunga to see if he could see Hinepukohurangi, this was something he had to do alone. Te hau promised he would wait for Uenuku . Te hau showed him this place where he can camp up and grow his kumara. The place is now known as Kapara Te Hau. They hugged goodbye and watched Uenuku start his journey. As he was getting to the top the weather started to change. icy wisps were surrounding him as the snow started to fall, He became to cold and just laid there as his last moments and thought about Hinepukohurangi before falling asleep.
  • Hinepukohurangi felt Uenuku’s love for her, She vowed never to see Uenuku again. She asked her people to reunite with him forever. They granted her wish and Hinepukohurangi showed on the top of the mountain and lay beside Uenuku embracing him once more. Their love joining them together with the land, growing out of the earth into a mountain range until tall and proud then they became Tapuae-O-Uenuku. The mountain stoll stands strong to this day, look at his people in Wairau.
