Once upon a time there lived a young man called Uenuku, who lived on a beautiful island named Hawaii. One day Uenuku took a walk around his island and heard an outstanding waiata. Uenuku decides to follow the waiata, and as he followed the waiata, there were two ataahua wahines. The two wahines were gods , one named Hinewai who was the morning dew and hinepukohurangi who was a mist maiden. Uenuku Introduced himself to Hinepukohurangi and offered to show her around Hawiki, Before long they fell in love. But………. Because Hinepukohurangi was a mist maiden their relationship had to be a secret.
Uenukus friends noticed that he wasn't spending time with them. One day they asked him “where have you been?” Uenuku didn't want to lie so he said I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND! Uenukus friends started laughing and said PROVE IT. That made Uenuku mad so he was tempted to prove them wrong!! The next day Uenuku covered all of the windows in his house so Hinepukohurangi would think it's night. Hinepukohurangi fell asleep and the next morning the whole village and Uenukus friends saw her, Hinepukohurangi felt betrayed , she yelled” Aue! You tricked me” she made a promise “ for as long as you live you will never lay eyes on me again”! Then Hinepukohurangi went back to her home ! (The land of the gods)
Uenuku was heartbroken , So Uenuku friends Maukatere Te Hau told Uenuku that a wise man had once said that the gods live in the land of Maui. (Aotearoa) So Uenuku and his friends packed their stuff and off they went.
They travelled for many days , until they arrived at a place called Aotearoa. They settled in a place called Rakautara , looking for Hinepokuhurangi and still no sign of her!
One day Uenuku saw a big mountain that reached high above the clouds. Uenuku decided to climb up the mountain hoping that from up there he could see Hinepukohurangi. Uenuku climbed higher and higher and as he was so close to the top the weather started changing. Soft clouds and snow began to fall. The weather was too strong for him so he lay down and as he laid down he pictured Hinepukohurangi before falling asleep. Hinepukohurangi felt Uenuku's love and asked her people to reunite him forever.Their love joining them together with the land, and they became Tapuae-o-Uenuku!!!
