Napoleon staged a coup against the Directory and took power in 1799. The Directory wasn't well-liked and put down rebellions with military force. They invalidated elections that had results they didn't like.
Napoleonic Wars
In March 1804 Napoleon passed the Napoleonic Code which helped by simplifying and improving the French law. He decreased women's rights and gave men more control over women.
Giving Positions to Friends
In December of 1804, Napoleon crowned himself Emperor and made France a hereditary Empire. He undid most of the French Revolution by reinstating a monarch as head of France.
Invasion of Russia
Napoleon went to war with many of the countries on the Continent. His military genius allowed him to defeat most of them and expand the French Empire. However, he made many more enemies and killed many people. He grew egotistical from his victories.
Napoleon gave positions in the French Empire to competent and loyal friends. He showed he wanted to rule the Empire with people he could trust and people who'd be good at the job.
Napoleon and his 100,000 troops invaded Russia in the winter. He attacked Russia because his ego allowed him to believe he could defeat them in the winter. The Russians burnt food and supplies when they lost. Many of his men starved and died of the cold while he rode in a carriage, warm and well-fed.
