- Yes my initial perception it bought me back to my early teens understanding Brionys nature.Given her external appearance, the mention of the squirrel's skull beneath her bed implies there may be secret aspects of Briony's life or wants that others do not know about, this creates a sense of pathos among readers.The passage's syntax is simple but effective in conveying Briony's feelings of solitude and loneliness and thought development throughout the lengthy summer months,
