  • The aim of the study was to see if the hippocampus is associated with spatial memory and navigation and whether structural changes could be noticed.
  • Background
  • Is a study on how the hippocampal volume can change in non humans and whether or not it is the same in humans as it is in birds and small mammals.
  • AIM
  • -Quasi experiment (because of the naturally occuring IV's)-Independent measures (participants only participated in the study once)
  • Method+
  • Independent-Whether or not they were already a taxi driver or not?Dependent-If there was a change in hippocampal grey matter
  • Independent variables/ dependent variables
  • 1st group- Taxi drivers-16 right handed male London taxi drivers-Aged 32 - 62-All had been taxi drivers for at least 1 1/2 years
  • 2nd group- Non taxi drivers- 50 participants-Right handed males-Aged 32 - 62
  • SAMPLE
  • Procedure
  • - Structural MRI scans were obtained from taxi / non taxi drivers.- 2 image analysis methods were used to analyse data.- Voxel based morphometry scan (to see the amount of grey matter)-Pixel counting scan
  • - The brain changes in response to the demands of being a taxi drive, than people who chose to be taxi drivers because they have pre- existing brain differences.- Human brain has plasticity to change and grow/ shrink in can change due to demand in environment
  • CONCLUSIONS
  • Taxi drivers- Found more grey matter in the right and left posterior hippocampusNon taxi drivers- More grey matter volume in the right and left anterior hippocampi
