  • August 25DEAR MARTIN (AKA DR. King)My name is Justyce McAllister. I'm a 17-year-old high school senior and full-scholarship student at Braselton Preparatory Academy in Atlanta, Georgia... I have a future a head of me! Sadly, during the wee hours of this morning , literaly none of that mattered.. Long story short. I tried to do a good deed and wound up on the ground in handcuffs. And despite the fact that my ex-girl was visibly drunk and trying to drive. The cop who cuffed me called for backup. I have never had my character questioned like this. I thought as long as I did good, was good, then I would have to worry about this type of thing happening to me. But I guess that doesn't matter, I was born black and I see now that it does make a difference. So, I am writting to you to kinda make it all make sence. I have studied you and your teaches and want to be like you, Martin. I want to live like you, Do what you do and see where it gets me. Justyce McAllister

  • January 19DEAR MARTIN,You know, I don't get it. Just being straight up. Every day I walk through the halls of that elitist-ass school, I feel like I don't belong there, and every time Jared or one of them opens their mouth, I'm reminded they agree. Every time I turn on the news and see another black person gunned down, I'm reminded that people look at me and see a threat instead of a human being. There was some white dude on TV after Tavarrius Jenkins thing broke talking about how cases like his and Shemar Carson's "deflect from the issue of "black-on-black crime, 'but how are black peoplesupposed to know how to treat each other, we've been told we're not respectable? What the hell are we supposed to do, Martin? What am I supposed to do? Be like Manny and act like these's nothing wrong with a white dude asking his "niggas" to help him exploit a black girl

  • Do I just take what they dish out, try to stop being "so sensitive"? What do I so when my very identity is being moked by people who refuse to admit there's a problem? I know I did the wrong thing tonight, but right now I can't find it in me to be remorseful. Those assholes can't seem to care about being offensive, so why should I give a damn about being agreeable? I gotta say: I've been reading your sermons and studying your books for six months now, and it feels like all I have to show for it is frustration and a sense of defeat. I swear I heard some girl ask "Why are black people so angryall the time?" as I left Blake's houde, but how else am O supposed to feel?My hand hurts I am going to bed. - JM

  • Yesterday morning, a Georgia jury found former Atlanta police officer Garrett Tison quiltiy on three of the fourcharges related to the January incident in which he was accused of shooting two teenage boys after an argument over thevolume of music. After 27 hours of deliberation, Tison was convicted of two misdemeanors -disorderly conduct and discharge of a pistol near a public highway- and aggraveted assult, the less severe of the two felonies. The jury was unable to reach a consensus regarding the felony murder charge, and a mistrial was declared on that count. Tison testified that he feared for his life, citing 27 years of law enforcenent experience in support ofhis ability to detect a genuine threat.Though Tison's claim that the teens had a gun was unsupported by evidence, the surviving teen, Justyce McAllister's, exposed connection to know gang members, including sixteen-year-old Quan Banks, the you man charged with murdering Tison's partner last August, cast a considerable pall over the proceedings. Mr. Tison will be retried on the murder count and sentenced on all convictions at a later date.
