Bruno asks Gretel, and lets him ask her what he wanted to ask her about, which was something about Out-With (the fence) ,but gets cut off by her.

Bruno correct Gretel saying that it is Out-With, but Gretel tells him that it is not.

Bruno states that it was what he had said, and Gretel told him it wasn't and tells him that he does not want to argue with him. She then asks Bruno what he wants to know anout the fence, which causes him to ask her about the fence and why it was there, asking what was so wrong with them that they cannot go over the fence and play.

Gretel laughs, telling him that the fence was sto stop their kind (Jews) from coming to their side of the fence, as they were to be kept with their own kind. Bruno asks her what she meant by their own kind and Gretel tells him that their own kind was Jews, telling him if he even knew that and telling him that they can't mix with them. Bruno repeats the word, Jews, feeling the word in his mouth, and proceeds to ask Gretel if they were Jews. Gretel was shocked, telling him that they were not, and that he shouldn't say something like that.

Bruno questions Gretel to ask what he was, and after a long thinking Gretel responds that they were the opposite.

Bruno asks Gretel if the Jews like their kind (Opposite), and Gretel replies disrespectfully saying that they did not like them, with the word stupid in the end. He asks her why the Opposites don't like them, with Gretel responding with the fact that they were Jews, therefore disliking them. Bruno sees what she is trying to say and asks her if the Opposites and Jews don't get along, with Gretel responding to him with a resounding no.

Gretel, can I ask you something?

If you make it quick.

Everything here at Out-With-

It's not called Out-With, Bruno...

It is called Out-With!

No it's not, anyway I'm not going to argue with you.

What is it, anyway? What do you want to know?

That's what I said..

I want to know about the fence and why it's there.

Whats so wrong with us that we can't go over there and play?

Bruno, the fence is to stop them from coming here; to be kept with their own kind.

What do you mean by their own kind?

With the other Jews, Bruno. Didn't you know that? That's why they have to be kept together; they can't mix with us.

Jews. All the people over hat side of the fence are Jews.

Yes, that's right.

Are we Jews?

No we are not. You shouldn't even say something like that!

Why not? What are we then?

We're...we're...well we are not Jews.

I know we're not. I'm asking you. If we're not Jews, what are we instead?

We're the opposite.

It's us who don't like them, stupid.

All right. And the opposite live on this side of the fence and the Jews live on that. Don't the Jews like the Opposite then?

No, Bruno.

Why don't we like them?

Because they're Jews.

I see. And the Opposites and Jews don't get along?
