  • Slide: 1
  • It’s been such a tough week at work. It’s times like these where I can’t help but ask, what’s the point of all of this? Why do we even exist? But, in the end, I always go back to my faith. I believe God has a plan for each and every one of us.
  • I’m curious about what “plan” you’re talking about. For me, it feels like we’re nothing but a product of chance. 4.5 billion years ago, gravity pulled gas and dust together to form the Earth and we evolved over millions of years through natural selection. Shouldn’t that be reason enough?
  • Slide: 2
  • I get why you’d think it were enough – it makes sense from a scientific point of view. But, I think that the reason for our existence isn’t just about how we came to be. It’s about why we’re here and what we’re meant to do with our lives.
  • But who says there even is a ‘why’? Maybe we just exist because the conditions were right. We search for meaning because we’re human, not because the universe or some higher being has one ready for us. What do you think?
  • Slide: 3
  • I believe that God created us to lead our lives with purpose. I mean, for centuries, we’ve infused meaning into our existence through our capacity for love and creation. Think about how deeply we are able to connect with one another....
  • The depth of our connections go beyond what is necessary for survival. It is the same with art, and yet, the world is so saturated with poetry, music, and storytelling because of art’s unique power to touch something deeper inside of us. To me, that's a glimpse of the greater purpose God planted in us from the start.
  • Slide: 4
  • I see where you’re coming from, and it’s very possible that these things evolved to help us survive, but to me, the mere fact that love, creativity, and meaning exist, despite everything seeming like a product of chance, shows that God is at work. It feels like a part of his greater, divine plan for us, beyond just survival.
  • Well, it’s true that love and creativity feel profound, but maybe they are just beautiful byproducts of evolution that helped us survive better as a species. We formed communities, made art, and built civilizations, all because it made life easier and more connected. It doesn’t have to mean it was planted by anything greater.
  • Slide: 5
  • Hey! I heard you two talking, and I would like to add something I learned from the late Pope Francis....
  • Slide: 6
  • He talked about how the evolution does not contradict the idea of creation. He believes that God didn't create the universe with some magic, but rather with His love, He planned how the universe would evolve.
  • Slide: 7
  • Hmm, that's interesting. So, it suggests that the universe was not created by some magic trick like God snapping His fingers and everything appearing as it is…
  • But it’s also telling us that God initiated the evolution to happen...
  • Slide: 8
  • Me too! I really appreciate how the late Pope Francis validated both the beliefs of believers and non-believers. He didn’t force one view over the other but encouraged us to seek understanding and find common ground.
  • I never thought about it like that. Maybe there's more room for harmony between faith and science than I realized.
  • Exactly! Pope Francis was trying to say that the evolution of the universe is a part of God’s plan from the very beginning. The pope put the reason for our existence beautifully, where faith and science don’t have to clash, but can coexist with each other.
