- "I couldn't go on hearing about it much longer. If anyone had been suspicious of me, I might have developed some strength to develop myself"(Knowles 62).
- I hope no one knows its me..
- Ya, I heard he shattered his leg from the fall off the tree! I wonder what happened.
- Hey did you hear about Finny?
- "I need to forget where and who I am"(62).

- Finally, Finny's pink shirt!
- "We wore the same size, and although he always criticized mine he used to wear the frequently..."(62).
- Gene is thinking about what he did to Finny, while the school is buzzing about Finny's in jury and what could have happened. Gene hopes no one knows that it was his fault for Finny falling out of the tree.
- Wow. I look like Finny.
- Gene spent a lot of time in his room trying to empty his mind and forget about who and where he was.
- "But he must be able to"(63).
- "Sports are finished for him after an accident like that. Of course"(63).
- One night, Gene was getting dressed for dinner and he decide that he wanted to wear Finny's clothes. He kept digging through the clothes until he found Finny's pink shirt.
- Once Gene puts on Finny's pink shirt he feel so much like Finny. He likes how it feel to be Finny.
- "I was Phineas, Phineas to the life. I even had his humorous expression in my face, his sharp, optimistic, awareness"(62).
- Finny's doctor, Dr. Stanpole, is filling Gene in on Finny's injury. He said that Finny will be able to walk again but will not be allowed to play any sports. This will be hard for Finny and Gene knows it.
- After hearing that Finny would not be able to do sports, Gene broke down into tears in the hallway. He knew it was all his fault because he was the one who pushed him out of the tree.
- "I cried for Phineas and for myself and for this doctor who believed in facing things. Most of all I cried becauseof kindness, which I had not expected" (64).
