- The knight had seen a maiden on the river side, and hurt her.
- I will tell you if you swear to do whatever I next ask of you
- I will pay you if you tell me what women most desire
- He was later taken to the queen to decide his punishment and he was met with a question.
- Before this court I ask you to keep your word and take me as your wife.
- Take all my goods but leave my body free!
- The knight traveled all over to find the answer to the queen question. Despite his efforts he was empty handed.
- Whatever pleases you suffices me.
- Would you rather me young and beautiful yet unfaithful, or old and ugly but loyal?
- You shall find me both fair and faithful as a wife.
- As the knight made his journey home, defeated, he spotted a group of women dancing, all but one vanished as he approached. She gave him an offer and he agreed.
- Upon my honor I agree
- The knight showed up in court and gave his answer that women desire power over their husband. The queen agreed and spared him. Then the old lady appeared and demanded he marry he as part of their deal.
- Despite his objections the knight married the old woman. The old woman gave him the choice between faith and beauty, he decided to not choose and allowed her to instead. Because of this she became both beautiful and faithful.
