  • Throughout the whole dull, dark, soundless autumn, I had been passing alone on a desolate tract of land
  • Through Poe's use of personification, which is giving human characteristics to things that are not human, the house of Usher is characterized as powerful and evil. "Vacant eye-like windows" is what the narrator describes in the first paragraph of the story. Which is an example of the author's use of personification. It advances the story as you can tell how his imagination progresses through the story and how wrong it was.

  • I was answered by a voice from within the tomb-at first like the sobbing of a child then a howling -a wailing shreik."--"The Black Cat
  • An example of Foreshadowing in the House Of usher is when,.#160;Roderick says "I must perish in this bounden slave" (Poe, pg9) this foreshadowing that Roderick will die. It progresses in the story as Rodrick does indeed die indicating that the foreshadowing was correct.

It progresses the story as it fills the reader with suspense.

It affects the story as it shows the viewpoint of poe toward the tree and the person he is describing.
  • An example of an allitearation in the House OF Usher is when Poe states ""During the whole dull, dark, soundless day in the autumn of the year, I had been passing alone on a dreary tract of land."--" the alliteration here comes from the use of Dull dark and soundless day as the words are all very similar. This alliteration affects the story as it again, shows the depth of his characters story.
