Frederick makes the decision to visit Master Thomas and file a complaint. Although being aware of the hardships and exhausting trip ahead of him, he is committed to obtaining protection.
RESOLUTION
While Mr. Covey looks the other way and makes his way into the woods, Frederick swiftly runs for it. Mr. Covey discovers that he has escaped and orders him to come back. Douglas pays attention to Covey's threats but ignores them as he makes progress toward Master Thomas.
Frederick returned to Coveys after receiving an unfavorable response from Master Thomas. In order to avoid him, he hides out and meets fellow slave Sandy Jenkins. Sandy extends a personal invitation to Douglas and encourages him to head back to Covey. He urged the people to always carry a root to protect themselves from further beatings. Frederick hesitates at first but eventually gives in.
Now, carry this root on the right side. It will protect you.
When Frederick gets back to Covey, he is met with a lengthy rope. To Covey's amazement, Frederick fights back when he is being tried to be restrained. Covey was ultimately victorious after a two-hour brawl between the fighters. Douglas developed a new motivation for independence as a result of his conflict with Mr. Covey; he no longer frightened Covey, but Covey now feared him.
