  • Boys, We have reached land.
  • Mexico, 1519
  • How do we know we can trust you? Attack him!
  • I wish to be your ally
  • In February 1519 he set sail with 11 ships, 530 men, 16 horses, large fighting dogs and 14 cannons and intended to colonise the place on behalf of the king of Spain and in the name of Christianity.
  • Hello. My name is Hernan Cortes. Can we come in?
  • Yes. Come in. I am sure you will feel very welcome here.
  • When Cortes arrived, he sailed along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He than came upon a vacant land and called it his own, than he made a settlement while making alliances with the indigenous.
  • At this point Cortes had already established several Indigenous allies, but went for the Tlaxcalans because they were the Aztecs rival tribe. Once they became allies the Tlaxcalans shared everything they knew about the Aztecs with the Spanish.
  • Montezuma II let the Spanish in because he didn't know if they were god or not as they wore the clothing of the gods. However soon they realize this is a mistake when Cortez took Montezuma as a hostage.
  • In early 1520, while Cortes was out of the city, the Spanish massacred a group of Aztec nobles during a festival. This was seen as unacceptable to the Aztecs and created an uprising and when Cortes returned he has found that the Spanish has loss control, during this fight Montezuma was killed.
  • In May 1521, Cortes returned to Tenochtitlan and laid siege to the city with a force of 550 Spanish solders and 10,000 Tlaxcala's. As well as carrying out daily attacks, he used boats to cut off supplies of food and destroyed the aqueduct that brought fresh water into the city and also used weapons like guns. This in return won him the war.
